Moonstone Mine & Factory Meetiyagoda - Hikkaduwa Sri Lanka
A moonstone is grey in colour and feels cool and smooth to the touch. When polished it has a glow like of the moon. Have you ever wondered where that pretty little moonstone on your finger actually comes from?

Moonstone’s are in the semi-precious category and are an important component of the Sri Lankan gem industry. The finest are bluish in colour and are found in high concentrations in heading inland 7km to Mitiyagoda, between Ambalangoda and Hikkaduwa.
Moonstone has been mined in these sweltering forests forever and the moonstone mines, little more than muddy rabbit holes, 6m or 7m long, are fascinating as is the process of filtering out the precious stones, cutting them up and polishing them up ready for sale. At the Moonstone Factory you can see or even go down into a narrow shaft where the stones are mined.
The visitor centre will provide information relative to the stones while the gift shop on the premises sells moonstones along with other gems like topaz, garnets, tiger eye and tourmaline.
Ambalangoda Mask Factory & Museum

Ambalangoda, is known as a centre for antiques and masks.

At the Mask Museum you can see many types of mask. Most are made from kaduru, a light, pliable wood similar to balsa. After carving, the masks were traditionally sanded using rough leaves or shark skin.
Masks are used for several purposes in Sri Lanka. As well as featuring in traditional dance, drama and comedies, and in large pageants and processions, they are also used in ceremonies to exorcise demons or cure illnesses.
The museum also contains several puppets, made from the same type of wood and manipulated with strings. The average height of traditional puppets is around 4 feet, but those representing royalty or nobility are taller and heavier. Puppet shows are accompanied by music on the drum and seraphina, as well as singing.
Sri Lanka is the 3rd largest cinnamon producer in the world and 80% of local production is exported. Ambalangoda is famous for its cinnamon cultivation and production.
If you’re lucky, you could observe skilled cinnamon peelers harvest the bark soon after the rainy season has soaked it to the skin, making it easier to peel. In 1518, when the Portuguese returned to sink their teeth into the island’s bounty, the annual tribute they extracted from the Sinhalese King Bhuvenekabahu for protecting his grandson Dharmapala, was a hefty 110,000 kgs of cinnamon bark.

OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS IN BENTOTA

Stilt fishing by local fishermen in Weligama

Stilt fishing is a method of fishing unique to the island country of Sri Lanka, located off the coast of India in the Indian Ocean. The fishermen sit on a cross bar called a petta tied to a vertical pole and driven into the sand a few meters offshore. From this high position, the fishermen casts his line, and waits until a fish comes along to be caught. Although the approach looks primitive and ancient, stilt fishing is actually a recent tradition.
The practice is believed to have started during World War II when food shortages and overcrowded fishing spots prompted some clever men to try fishing on the water. At first they started fishing from wrecks of capsized ships and downed aircraft, then some began erecting their stilts in coral reefs. The skills were then passed on to at least two generations of fishermen living along a 30 km stretch of southern shore between the towns of Unawatuna and Weligama.
Enroute, you will stop at Weligama, where you will witness stilt fishing by local fishermen….. Even their life is very hard for them, the beauty of the view they give while they are struggling for to lives will remembered by every one...
