The Onam Theme – Welcoming Mahabali

Set amidst the lush green Coconut Grove is an Island….. called the Gundu…..There are many Islands in Kochi… one might contend…. What’s so special about this one, one might query…. Well, it is an uninhabited Island tucked away in the luxury of uninterrupted cool breeze from the Arabian Sea!! Naturally air-conditioned !!!

Surrounded on all sides by the extremely scenic backwaters of Kochi and is majestically placed at a vantage point which is about fifteen minutes by boat from the Taj Malabar’s Private Boat Jetty. We have made an effort to recreate a small traditional and typical Kerala Village décor on the Island. Complete with thatched huts and much much more….. We strongly believe and realize that guest comforts cannot be compromised on… hence the only signs of modernity on the Island are the newly built toilets for freshening up. Though the Island is surrounded by water, there was a requirement of pure water…. and hence the placement of hygienic water tanks to store water to be used during function. The unmatched location is what makes the Gundu Island a much sought after venue for having high profile parties and get-togethers where people just forget that they have the miseries and tension of day-to-day life and have a thoroughly enjoyable gala time……. Since the Island is uninhabited, there is very less chance of pollution and hence an extremely clean unpolluted land surrounded by water….. is what we promise…. Heaven on Earth one might wonder !!!

Legend: Spring is in the air. It is the season of Onam, King Mahabali is being honoured – Kerala’s most beloved mythological hero, under whose rule Kerala enjoyed boundless prosperity. Mahabali, who was so just, and so adored by his subjects that he invoked the jealousy of the gods. Lord Vishnu then appeared before him and snatched away his kingdom, but Mahabali was given the freedom to visit his people once a year. And so for generations, the people pf Kerala get ready to welcome him back – the Onam celebrations.

Event: Opens with Floral Pictorial Art – an exquisite floral kolam (design) symbolizing spring, done live by young girls in typical Kerala white’n’gold costumes. The kolam uses the red lantana, the yellow marigold asters, the scarlet button flowers etc. A dramatic 10-minute Dance – Drama depicting the story of Mahabali, with a Bharat Natyam dancer portraying both characters – Mahabali and Vishnu. Group of female dancers

join in, to do the Thiruvadhira Dance – Kerala’s famous cultural event. Graceful and synchronized dancing. Then a Harvest Dance. Then, a rollicking Festive Group Dance. Spectacular Mohiniyattam performance – the Dance of the Enchantress. Dancers in gorgeous white ‘n’ gold costumes.

Ambience: Kerala Village Theme, Thatched huts, rice grains in mounds, floral swings, green plantain trees, lamps…
